Hints for debugging TortoiseSVN lock-ups?

I had TortoiseSVN working fine last month; but when I went to use it today,
the program locks up any time it goes out to the repository. Usually,
Windows figures out that the program is locked and offers to kill it for
me.

For instance, if I clear the authentication data in Settings, then run the
repo browser, it asks for the url, I give it one from the history list, it
asks for authentication data, I give it a username and password, and get
"Please wait..."

and that's the end of things.

There are no new entries in logfile.txt.

I can use the web browser to browse the SVN server with no issues from this
machine.

I know this isn't much to go on...so I'm asking what else I can do to debug
this?

My configuration is odd. I'm running WinXP in a VirtualBox virtual machine
(running on top of an Ubuntu host). SVN server is running on a separate
Ubuntu 14.04 PC. I was running TortoiseSVN 1.8.6, and upgraded to 1.8.8
build 25755 today to see if that would fix it.

I can access the repository from the Ubuntu Host using RapidSVN.

I haven't used TortoiseSVN in a month, so it's safe to assume that
VirtualBox, the underlying Ubuntu OS, and the server OS have all been
updated at some point(s) in that period.

I've poked around in the server logs and haven't seen any definitive red
flags, but I can't say I know what I'm looking for.
