Felix gave the better answer, especially since you already have a copy of the folder locally.
If you ever need to get just a few pieces of a large project over a slow connection or onto limited disk space, you can do the reverse, starting with the shallow checkout as I'd mentioned and then updating with recursive depth any subfolders you want to sync into your working copy. Then you won't have to synchronize gigs of data before you exclude them.
Good luck learning TortoiseSvn/Subversion! We've been using it here for several years now at a fairly basic level and I'm still learning new tips/tricks & uses on a regular basis which help us improve our code quality and productivity.

Right click on "SUBDIR1" and chose "Update to revision" from the context
I'd recommend the first alternative.
