question is now, why does it even send a key? I guess that's why TPlink
crashes (doesn't handle the error well).

I would have to find the bug, but to do that I need a way to reproduce
the problem. TPlink does not crash with my test setup. So maybe you can
set up a test repo for me which I can access?
