Yes I was able to get it working via the gui by changing the URL path to something like this:

file://mydomain.com/long/url/dept/folder/subfolder/Appraisal

I could then check out a fresh copy of what is in the repository, make changes and commit them. So it seems to be working as expected, but it didn't like the mapped drive URL. Thanks again for your help.
