Totoise SVN update and lost repository locations

Is it just me or is it so that updating TortoiseSVN is installing a new
version on top of the old?
And when the SW is updated, the "linkage" between the local directory and
the repository is lost?

It looks like I, for one, have to delete the local directories and
re-checkout all the repository branches
I use to make the version control work again. That is about 40 GB.
And if there happens to be some changes not checked in (by accident)...
