I honestly cannot piece together what you did from your prose description.

Can you please give a series of SVN commands or specific menu
selections to create these working copies? You even include two
checkouts of "the b dir" which doesn't exist at all in your
repository, and I'm pretty sure one of your working copies was meant
to be the a1/... tree.
