I for one NEVER use the automated merge commit message, even though it
appears like it SHOULD be useful. I usually just delete the whole
thing and write it from scratch, because it contains too many
irrelevant changes in other areas of the same repository to be worth
cleaning up.

The situation is probably worse for me, because the repository I use
at work contains multiple independent projects, each with their own
set of trunk/branches/tags directories, as described in the third
example at http://tortoisesvn.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/tsvn-repository.html#tsvn-repository-layout
. So, every time I do a merge from a branch in one project to that
project's trunk, I get log messages inserted from completely
independent projects that share zero code whatsoever with mine.
