SVN painfully slow without vpn

Hi!
If I am _not_ connected to the company network with vpn, all svn operations accessing the server are painfully slow: repository browsing, file diff...
Not all users have this problem, so I am guessing there must be something I can do on my pc. But where do I start to look?
