This description is for updating via the repo browser, not choose
items. I don't see any checkboxes and it seems to work as expected.

Agreed. The docs are wrong.

The folders which are not checked out are displayed as files not
directories, which is probably why the filter doesn't work. I think
this is probably a bug, unless it is not possible to detect the
difference. Stefan?
