Microsoft Word documents become read-only during editing

Has anyone else encountered the following problem when editing Microsoft Word
documents (in my case, *.docm files) that have been checked into subversion
using TortoiseSVN as client:

Initally when the doc is opened, everything is fine. Then at some point, it
will become read-only and any edits have to be discarded or a new copy of
the document saved. Checking the properties of the document shows the "Read
Only" flag isn't set. When the document is closed, then reopened, the
problem is gone (at least until it happens again).
