I made a number of settings changes to the Icon overlay status cache settings and that didn't seem to have any effect. I did not try any "include path" changes or "drive type" changes.
Right now I've re-installed and following input from jeanmarc I disabled all shell extensions using ShellExView that are not under a company name of Microsoft or TortoiseSVN. No more explorer errors were encountered. Now I'm going through the process of slowly enabling different shell extensions and seeing if certain combinations cause the problem. I have reproduced the problem when both TortoiseSVN and MOZY (the backup utility) are enabled at the same time. My other PC has both Mozy and TortoiseSVN enabled and it hasn't exhibited the same issue of shutting down explorer. It really could just be this one specific machine configuration.
Still - it would be nice to precisely identify the issue in case others experience it.
