Actually I guess I'm wrong, because I just looked and it turns out when
you go into check for modifications dialogue, then click check
repository, you do indeed have an option to update only selected parts
of your wc by right clicking on items that it shows with a remote status
of modified. That's pretty much exactly what I was looking for, I just
didn't realize it was there. I think it confused me that the top level
commit dialogue prompted you about which items to commit, while the
update option didn't prompt you about which items to update.

What I've always done is use check for modifications -> check repository
to see what stuff would have been pulled down if I did the top level
update, then went back to windows explorer and manually right clicked on
only the parts that I wanted to update and updated them one at a time.
From now on I'll just use the right click -> update option in the check
for modifications dialogue, which I just now discovered.
