Switch Off Automatic Update Check

What happened to the ability to switch off the automatic update check?

I subscribe to the email announcements to tell me when a new version
is available, but I don't really want very user in my company checking
for updates and rolling them out 'behind my back' so to speak.

Is there any way I can do this with the latest versions?
