Downloading Way More Data than the Trunk Size

I was given a trunk url that everyone uses here for one of our web services.
The total trunk is only about 17mb or so. However when performing an
checkout over vpn with Tortoise 1.6 (not that the client version matters
here), I'm getting upwards into 300+ megabytes downloaded! What's wrong?
How can that even happen when I'm 100% sure this is the same trunk I've
downloaded on another virtual machine that sits inside our domain?
