"Check for modifications" "Check repository" doesn't change status of local files icons

When I pick "Check for modifications" "Check repository" I see changes that
others have made to the repository trunk for a project relative to my own
local working copy of the trunk. However, the status icons for my local
file copies for those files changed in the repository by others don't
change. I don't want to do an "Update" because that often "breaks the
build". I just want my local status to know things have changed relative to
the repository by changing appropriate file & folder icons from green to
red. Is this possible? Thanks.
