As it turns out, I actually had the 64-bit version of the OS. I had to
send the laptop back to Dell for repairs, and for some reason, they
installed the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate instead of the 32-
bit version. They certainly did not tell me about it!
Anyway, that's undoubtedly the reason why the shortcuts were not
showing up. Please do not expend further effort in investigating this
problem.
