On a slow connection, it's useful to have the number just so you can
see it change occasionally to confirm that something is still going
on, and see that it changes by larger numbers when more data is being
transferred (which helps me realise why no new files have appeared in
the list for a long time; e.g. because I'm pulling down a big binary
someone has committed).

I don't mind what the number is or if it is accurate; as long as it's
roughly proportional it is still useful to me.

Not saying it shouldn't be made more accurate if it can be, just that
it is useful even if it is inaccurate.
