Merge failing

I am attempting to merge the project trunk into a branch but after
nearly 10 minutes it fails with the error message:

Runtime Error!

Program C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin\TortoiseProc.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual
way.

I have had some errors about running out of memory and the Task Manager
backs this up as I can see the memory usage climbing and the computer
grinds to a crawl until the merge crashes.

This worked perfectly on a small test application (3 objects) but this
project has approx 5,000 objects.

I have tried merging a single revision to attempt to minimize the number
of changes but it still fails.

Window XP Professional SP3

Visual SVN Server running on Windows Server 2003 SP2

TortoiseSVN 1.6.12, Build 20536 - 32 Bit , 2010/11/24 20:59:01

Subversion 1.6.15,

I'm at a complete loss. I have found a number of references to this
error while searching the net and this site, but have not found a fix.
This is the first time we have used SVN and need its branching/merging
capabilities. I would hate to have to start looking for an alternative.
