I am saying that since Stefan posted a link to this bug report in
response to almost exactly the same question you are asking, that it's
probably relevant to your question.

The code that handles this can be seen here (starting at line 2901):

Also, there are at least 2 layers here HTTP and WebDAV (if I understand
correctly) both of which support compression ...
