So I now gather. I was previously under the impression that they were there to (for example) be able to do a more content-aware parsing of two files, and decide that such-and-such a difference did not cause a difference in meaningful content (such as if someone had just changed the whitespacing in C source).

Still can't see why they need to return 0/1/fail, though, if the fact that they are different is already known.
