By default, anything that uses Explorer, such as the File..Open dialog
box, will invoke Tortoise's DLLs to show the icon overlays. This can
be changed. See
http://tortoisesvn.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/tsvn-dug-settings.html#tsvn-dug-settings-overlay

But with the number of corporate users, I think if Tortoise was
causing corruption in Outlook we would have heard about it here by
now.
