How to co-work with a read-only repository?

There's a read-only repository, and there's my own repository in my own
computer,
I initialize my repository with read-only repository code, but when updates
available from read-only repository,
what's the best practice for me to merge read-only repository updates to my
repository?
And how to manage the merge info?
