checkboxes in 'Select revision range' dialog are confusing

can someone take a look at the usability of the checkboxes in the
'Select revision range' dialog? i find this dialog very hard to use,
maybe i'm missing something.

- the checkboxes are only visible when the row is selected or hovered.
however they can be invisible AND checked !!?
- clicking on a selected row deselects it while maintaining the rest
of the selection, but clicking on a non-selected row clears the
selection and selects the clicked row.
- there's no easy way to select/toggle a range of checkboxes. unless
checking each invisble checkbox is considered easy. oh, and if you
miss the checkbox and click the row then your selection is cleared,
making all the checkboxes you just checked invisible!

can you please make the checkboxes in this dialog work like the ones
in the commit/revert dialogs?
