Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've tried with the command line client and get exactly the same behaviour.

We have just migrated to a new network, and we were serving it up over http via Apache. I was just sanity checking the repository before I went to the trouble of setting up another Apache server. I can check again once it's set up over http, but this is surely still a serious bug if indeed it is one.
