"not a working copy" error, etc.

Sorry if this is a repeat question - I looked and didn't see answers to this problem elsewhere.
I've been using an old version of TortoiseSVN for quite some time (forgot the rev #) and lately have been having problem when committing large numbers of changes at once - usually a database problem of some sort. So I decided it was past time to update SVN to the latest release. I checked in all my files and installed TortoiseSVN 1.6.6 (32 bit MSI installer for Windows. Running XP, SP2).
I edited a single file and went to commit, and got ".C:\documents and settings\....\Temp\svnB14.tmp' is not a working copy"
Playing with it some more, I find that if I do an "SVN update", I get "Skipped C:\Documents...\Temp\svnB11.tmp" and nothing happens.
It took some time (several hours), but eventually, the SVN overlay icons vanished in Explorer. I can still right-click and browse the repository; I just can't use it. It's as if it knows it's there and related to my working copy yet doesn't think so. I have .svn directories in my working copy tree.
Is there something else I need to do following the upgrade to make this work?
thanks
