It is probably not a good idea to apply too much magic to this problem.
Behaviour
that is ideal for yourself may be surprising to another user (i.e.
reported as a bug).

Instead of altering the content of a column based on the visibility of
another column;
it would be better to introduce another column type: "Short Path". When
the column
needs to be sorted it could be sorted as per the existing "Path" column.

I think this would be easy, but unexciting, to implement.
