Either way, you don't need to disable the anti-virus at all for that: most of them have a feature, known as process white-listing, where you can place the ones you trust. Adding "TortoiseProc.exe" and "TSVNCache.exe" to the list should fix the slowness (if it's being caused by the anti-virus, of course). ;-)
