If an anonymous checkout is allowed, then you simply can not checkout as
a user - the server doesn't ask for authentication.

Browsing the repository doesn't require write access. That's no
indication at all that you're using the correct url (the one for commit
access).

if you don't get an authentication prompt, then either your server is
not set up correctly or you're using the wrong url.
