All files were in the same directory, none were externals. All were text. The one in the error message was NOT the added one, but including/excluding it made no difference. I'd tried cleanup several times without any change in the problem.

I have since worked out that the problem was due to a 3rd party app (Ext2IFS - http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html) I have on my system. This app enables my data partition to be used by both Win XP and Linux on a dual-boot machine. On a hunch, I upgraded Ext2IFS from 1.10c to 1.11a and my problem has gone away.
