Don't check out the "repository" but only check out the parts you are
interested in. If those are not separable, sparse checkouts (I'm not 100%
sure since when those are available) or "svn switch"ing selected parts to an
empty directory help, though the latter still requires initially downloading
the data once.

You can do that, too, using "svn switch --relocate", to inform SVN of a
changed repository URL.
