Overlay icons unreliable

I've been having unreliable display of overlay icons since the status
cache was introduced (which was quite a while ago).
In general, the folder pane (left side) seems to be out of sync with
reality more often than the file pane (right side).

Is there a reliable way of determining the status of a directory?
(Something like right-click a directory and select some TSVN operation.)

Also, it would help if TSVN could indicate whether the current status
icon is reliable or not. (E.g. a dimmed icon if it may be outdated, and
solid color if it's known to be up-to-date. Assuming TSVN can figure out
if it has reliable information - maybe in those situations where file
update notifications sent by Windows are reliable.)
