You didn't create a spare checkout then - you simply have 4 separate
checkouts in 4 different directories (3 just happen to be subdirs).

I tend to checkout the root, using depth of "this item only", then open
the repobrowser using that working copy, find the project I want to play
with, and use 'update to revision' on it. That fetches the project to
the correct directory relative to the root.
