Looking at the date of your first message, I can guess what happened.

You got a reminder for 1.6.1 (which was about a month old, so the reminder was appropriate) and updated to it.

Then, by coincidence, 1.6.2 was released almost immediately, possibly while your 1.6.1 installation was happening. You got a new reminder for that. That was bad luck, but is unusual.

Perhaps it would be better if the update check delayed for a week after installing a new version, but I'd prefer Stefan's time to go into other features of TortoiseSVN than fine-tuning the update reminder. As an alternative, perhaps turn off the automatic update check and subscribe instead to the release announcements at http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/servlets/ProjectNewsList ?
