OK, I had read the ignore-commit faq before my original post and misinterpreted it (this is what I get for speed reading). I had originally interpreted "template" to mean dummy file name and/or directory structure and extrapolated that the intention was to "OS copy" the real version from somewhere else (which would completely defeat the purpose). I now see that "template" means the instance of the file/resource/etc that I want under version control but renamed to protect it from changes. Thanks for straightening me out.
