I used the nightly build, and it fixed the crashes for me, so that's the way to go if you can't wait for the next release...

This is probably caused by a bug that has been fixed in the current development version. You can try a nightly build from the stable 1.6.x branch[1]. Or wait for the 1.6.1 release expected somewhere mid April.
