Windows characters and unversioning

The site I own was usually versioned and downloaded by the programmer during development.

Now the site is actively being used by a community. I'm trying to do a fresh new checkout on a new computer. However, there is this one folder giving me problems because it contains files with names containing characters Windows will not accept and TSVN keeps crashing. It will not let me do a clean fresh download of the entire site.

Someone suggested that I get rid of SVN altogether, others suggested that I simply unversion the problematic folder.

What shall I do? I am afraid of messing with it and accidently deleting content from the live site, which is constantly being updated. The folder (and others) NEED to remain on the site, with all its content, which is constantly being updated by others.

I'm not a hugely tech person. My TSVN is 1.5.5.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
EOken.
