I think you are confusing 2 issues here. As Kurt already mentioned,
those date dialogs are only filters for the range of revisions you
already have. That is why clicking "Show All" makes the selection work
- it fetched more revisions so the date you click on is then within
the range of revisions you have downloaded.

But I agree that inactive dates should be grayed out. Try the
following exercise:
Show log for a WC which has a lot of activity at the end of the month
and not much at the start, say active from 10 - 31 March.
Open the From calendar and select March 20th.
Log dialog shows March 20 - March 31.
Now try to remove the filter - where do you go back to?
Clicking on March 1 has no effect.
Clicking on March 15 works, but how do I know there was no activity before that?
The only way (apart from re-fetching the log) is to click on 1, 2, 3
... until something happens.
