Can not diff/open new file without Update

TortoiseSVN 1.5.9.15518 32-bit
(also v1.5.7)

After selecting "Check for Modifications" in the explorer context menu, then
clicking the "Check repository" button in the window, an added file is
shown in the list.

If I right click it, and select Open (or Open with...) I always get
File not found error.

There is no other similar option in the menu (like "Diff...").

So I can not inspect the changes, but have to accept ("Update")
them blindly.
Am I missing something ?
