I had already enforced needs-lock as suggested. This helps, with a minor complaint: it cannot be enforced per folder.

I have entire trees of folders that are dedicate to binary resources that users can contribute to, including adding new files. I need to be able to set the parent to needs-lock, rather than having to do this on individual basis.

Maybe i'll get around to scripting it sometime, haven't look into this yet.

Your suggestion to possibly have "Previous Messages" button of some sort is a good one. Basically as long as they are able to see what they typed previously would be an improvement. Maybe it could be some form of frop down list, when clicked will append it's contents to the current log message text? Important point here is that they already typed relevant text that helps when updating log - and they want to see it. Is there a work around i can provide them?
