Tortoise overlay icons after uninstall

I have uninstalled all instances of TortoiseSVN, removed all
references to it in the registry and deleted the folder in Application
Data that isn't removed by the uninstall. I have checked using
Autoruns that the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers has no tortoise entries (as
suggested by an earlier post). There is no TSVNCache.exe program
running.

However, every file icon on my desktop and every file icon in every
folder in My Documents has the tortoise icon overlays applied to it
(no directories have overlays). Furthermore the icons start as green
ticks, change to orange arrows when files are edited and display red
exclamation marks when new files are created. There are no .svn
folders in any directory. This would be annoying on it's own but now
browsing through folders has slowed to a crawl as explorer spends an
age deciding on what icon overlays to apply before displaying the
directory contents.

I had been using tortoise without problem for many months on this
machine and the problem seemed to start when I upgraded tortoise about
a month ago.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do besides formatting the hard
drive and reinstalling windows to get rid of the tortoise icons?
