Slow right click in windows explorer (tsvn 1.5.2)

I am seeing very slow right clicks in windows explorer on svn
directories. I have used process monitor to determine that the shell
extension is reading the .svn/entries file for every sub-directory.
When my machine's disk is busy this can cause a 30 second delay to get
the context menu up.

I looked at the thread http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=dev&by=thread&from=326854
but the suggested resolution for that (activate the new option "Don't
fetch status for context menu" in the Look and Feel page in the
settings dialog) doesn't exist in the current tortoise.

I also couldn't find any discussion in the thread as to why tortoise
needs to read those files. Can you let me know why?

Is there any option now do disable this behaviour? I've been through
all the settings panes and can't see anything relevant.

Dan
