Wait, what?

The FAQ you got linked to just says that the revision numbers will
change if you do a dump/load of one repository into another (which
they'll obviously have to, since you can't duplicate revision numbers) -
but it's worked fine for me to consolidate several repositories with no
ill effects.

Just create a copy of your target repository for testing, then dump/load
the other repository into it and see what happens...
