With Microsoft Network Monitor I found out the differences between a
share without problems:

and the share with the freezing problem:

From the time offset in the second column You can see, that in the
second case the request take longer to complete.

After I installed Tortoise 1.4.8, there is no freeze problem, but
there are also many requests like the following:

On a system without Tortoise installed, there is no SMB traffic at
all, when I right click on a directory.

Can anyone tell me, why the same request is sent over and over again
in both cases, just because Tortoise is installed? This is not very
efficient even in the case, where there is no problem. In Tortoise
settings I only chose fixed drives for icon overlays and set an
include path. Therefore I don't see, why Tortoise needs to check a
network drive at all.
