Whitespace substitution with '.'

We are new to subversion and my developers are just starting to delve
into it with TortoiseSVN. One thing they are not liking is the
substitution of whitespace with '.'

They are using c++ and they have '.' throughout the code causing
confusion. Is there a way we can change the character substitution for
whitespace?
