Yes that is a bit ambiguous. Since checking out the working copy is
called "Import" in the German version of the drop down window I called
it "import", too. But it certainly is checking out.

True. :-) The problem was mysteriously solved after I check out the
repository with the command line svn. Tertoise realized that - and now
everything appears to be fine.
