serious performance problems on laptop

I cannot figure out why Tortoise on my laptop has such serious
performance problems. The TSVNCache.exe seems to be causing Explorer
to hang for minutes on end, slowing the entire computer down.

Connecting to a repository to get an update of a single file from a
repository on my local network (so net lag is negligible) takes
sometimes between 3 to 10 minutes with noticeable overall machine lag.
Switching away from the update window while it chugs along proves
slows the entire machine down.

As soon as I uninstall Tortoise and go back to svn cli (eg, "svn
update") I get no lag and overall the computer performs great.

Anyone have some insight as to what might be going on? I really miss
those essential visual keys from tortoise -- the cherished icon
overlays -- and other shortcuts that really help speed up my dev
process and repository administration.

I had the latest stable tortoise release installed. (cant remember the
exact release number)
Windows XP SP2 English
Intel chip 1.83Ghz w/ 1GB ram

What stats do you need for me to appropriately describe my env?
