It just doesn't work that way. The date ranges are used to narrow down
the range of revisions that you already have. You might want to do
that if you are sorting logs by some other column than date, although
I can't say it is a feature I ever use.

I agree that it might be more useful to use the dates as a way of
specifying a revision range, but I don't know how hard that would be
to implement.
