Tortoise 1.4.6 locks Explorer on Windows-XP and affects file access performance

Hi all I've experienced a very curious problem.

We are running subversion 1.4.6 linked against Apache 2.2 on a W2k3
server SP2 and has been doing so for a year or so and have had no
problems of any kind when using earlier releases of Tortoise but after I
installed the latest 1.4.6 release things went down hill.

When I expand the working directory in Explorer it hangs forever and the
only way of restoring this is to kill Explorer process which then
informs me that TortoiseProcWnd process is not responding.

I tried to wipe the entire work set from my local disc and getting a
fresh copy from the server and that sorted the problem as long as I did
not log out and in again to our domain.

However next problem was that when building either from makefiles or a
Visual Studio 2003 project with 100-300 files the build speed is
severely affected by something that make my dual core machine crawl next
to a stand still. There is no lockup but the file access seems to be
extremely slow and I cannot tell from the Task manager that there is any
particular tortoise process stealing any cpu power the file access is
just painfully slow.

When I logged back in today I was met with the same problems once again
and with that I switched back to 1.4.5 and all is working well again.

Also note that the Windows-XP machines I run on has all the latest
patches and does not run any virus/antiwhatever which I uninstalled
during my investigation of this issue.

Have anyone else experienced these problems with the 1.4.6 release of
Tortoise?
