checking out an imported repository

Hi guys, I am new to SVN, or at least new to running my own SVN server. I
have used tortoise b4.
I have installed visualSVN on my windows 2003 and created a repository.
Then according to the SVN docs I imported my folders/files into the
repository, I then tried to checkout the repository to create my working
copy over the top of the original files/folders.
This however does not work and fails telling me that folder x already exists
on every folder.

I don't know whether it makes any difference, but my files are on a mapped
network drive.

This method has worked fine when I am using someone elses SVN repository,
such as riaforge.org
