Perhaps a better approach is to create default template files that
contain the relevant setup for new users and generate/copy derived
files from them for local customisations.

Version the template files and ignore the derived files.

Whenever you make a change that is relevant to other users, make the
change to the template file(s) and commit these changes. Other
developers can then notice the changes to the template file(s) and
modify their local copies accordingly.
